Asbestos is the number one issue our customers doing demolition and remodel jobs run into. Most do not realize just how hazardous this material is and as a result they ignore, or are not aware of, the regulations that govern its disposal. That is why Benchmark Recycling requires asbestos testing, known as an AHERA survey, be done on all demolition and remodel jobs. This is for the protection of our customers, as the cost to abate asbestos from our containers, along with the fines that are imposed if it is handled incorrectly, are staggering. We truly do want our customers to get their jobs done not only cost effectively but timely as well and this issue can put a stop to your job. The up front costs of an asbestos survey are reasonable and will ensure that the job is completed without costly mistakes.
To help our customers understand what asbestos was used in the following list is a small sampling of materials that are presumed to contain asbestos until proven that they do not. The wide use of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) in the building industry is why it is essential that all demolition and renovation projects be inspected and tested for ACM and all ACM be removed before unprotected workers are allowed in the work area.

Note: This list does not include every product that may contain asbestos. It is intended as a general guide to show which types of materials may contain asbestos. Asbestos was well regarded as a miracle mineral that was easily manufactured into a vast array of building materials. It has been in use for thousands of years and became very popular during the 40's. Later it was discovered to cause irreversible respiratory problems in people who worked with it and breathed the asbestos fibers when they became airborne. Its use has been limited since the early 1980's. HOWEVER, it can still be found in some new materials sold and used today.
